Pine River sophomore posts strong running season

LEROY — Rachel DePew  emerged as among the top runners for Pine River’s girls cross country team this season.

She was third for Pine River at Chippewa Hills late in the season. Sometimes, she’s been second.

At Chip Hills, “it was good, cold, chilly and wet,” DePew, a sophomore, said. “It was a lot hillier course.”

She’s been running for cross country for two years of varsity and also ran in middle school. It’s her fourth season. She improved about four or five minutes from last year.

“I’m trying harder, I guess,” DePew said, adding she’s pacing better.

“Usually in the middle, I try to push myself harder,” she said.

DePew’s PR has been the 24-minute mark. She wanted to get into the 23s before the season ended.

“I have to try harder,” she said.

DePew also is in competitive cheer and track, but lists cross country as her favorite because of the individual aspect.

The team, “has been going good,” she said. “We’ve had some injuries. We’ve been improving.”
