Pine River sophomore giving team key boost on court

LEROY — Logan Powell continues to make strides as a sophomore basketball player for the Pine River girls.

It’s Powell’s second varsity season.

“We wanted to come out confident and strong and we had to quit turning the ball over,” she said prior to the holiday break when the Bucks were starting off undefeated at 5-0. “We did good all around.”

They lost their first game earlier this month to McBain in overtime.

“We can always play better,” Powell said. “We have all the seniors.”

It’s potentially a better team from a year ago, Powell said.

“Our bench has gotten really strong,” he said. “That’s helped us a lot.”

Powell’s role has changed somewhat from last year. But in many ways, it’s still the same. She’s more comfortable as a sophomore

“I would say I’m more confident and I’m having more fun when I’m out there,” she said. “Her ball handling and my outside shooting remain strengths.

To beat tough teams “we just have to control our nerves and be confident we can do it,” she said.

Pine River is scheduled to play Wednesday night at Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy and will be home Friday in Highland Conference action against Lake City.
