LEROY — Anna Lindquist is among some of the newer faces hoping to play a key role for the Pine River girls basketball team this season.

Lindquist, a sophomore, has been starting for the Bucks, but said she feels comfortable in the varsity lineup.

“It’s a higher-paced game with more physical (play),” Lindquist said, adding that her role has been nothing specific, but her strengths are being “good at running the floor.”

After the first few games, Lindquist has basically been satisfied with her performances. But it’s still a long season and Lindquist is focusing on improving in various areas, including “my ball handling and being able to read the defense.”

The Bucks are 3-1 with their only loss coming to Morley Stanwood. But they’re coming off an impressive win over McBain.

Now it’s the holiday break with the Bucks getting ready for the 2015 portion of the schedule. Practices will continue during the break with the next game set for next Monday at home with Elk Rapids in nonleague play, followed by a home Highland Conference game Jan. 8 with Marion.

“I think we need to get better at communication,” Lindquist said. “I think we can go pretty far in tournament play. We need good defense and not many turnovers.”
