LEROY — Logan Powell got one year of varsity basketball under her belt last year and hopes it pays off during the 2016-017 season.

She’s played a key role in her team’s 5-0 start.

“We wanted to come out confident and strong and we had to quit turning the ball over,” Powell said after her team’s 62-42 win over Gladwin last month.

“We can always play better. I’m real excited for this season. We have all of our seniors.’

Most of the starters have returned from last season.

”Our bench has gotten really strong and that’s helped us a lot,” Powell said.

The Bucks resume action on Friday at McBain against an opponent that could give them a serious chase for first place in the Highland.

”We have to be confident in ourselves that we can do it,” Powell said.

The Bucks also play at Marion on Jan. 10 and are home Jan. 12 against McBain Northern Michigan Christian.

As a player, “I just feel more confident on my rebounding and having more fun when I’m out there,” Powell said, adding her confidence has improved as a sophomore.

Her strengths have been “my ball handling and outside shooting,” she said. “I’m not very big so I have to (focus) on the outside.”
