Pine River softball team opens summer season with split

LEROY — Pine River’s summer softball team finally got some Local Area Teams (LAT) League action in last Wednesday after postponements the previous two weeks.

The Bucks split with Cadillac at Bristol Fields, losing the first game 13-1 and taking the second 11-6.

“It was nice to have a night to finally get some innings in,” Pine River coach Laura Mumby said. “We have a lot of girls out here and it’s nice to get that much interest and give everybody some playing time.”

The Bucks had 16 players at the doubleheader.

“That’s going to be our norm,” Mumby said. “It’s a good mix of varsity and JV kids, more JV than varsity.”

Dana Hill took the loss in the first game. Nichols Brown pitched in relief.

Paige VanHulst and Carleigh Trowbridge both had triples, Paige VanHulst had an RBI.

Jenna Johnson, Courtney Smith and Chelsey TerBurgh had singles.

Courtney Smith was the winning pitcher in the second game, striking out three, walking five and allowing two hits and one runs scored in three innings. Johnson had two doubles, TerBurgh had a two-run single. Saige Watson had a single and Smith added two RBI.

“We usually go to Mount Pleasant with our varsity kids and this is more of a JV league,” Mumby said. “All of our coaches decided this year instead of going to Mount Pleasant that we were going to come here and get more local action going on.”

Pine River will have LAT League games Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and next. All will be doubleheaders starting at 5 p.m.

“We’ll probably have the varsity-age kids get playing time than the JV kids, but it’s beneficial to have everybody out here getting some time in together, some at-bats and see how we do things,” Mumby said. “Most of the positions is what they’ll play. We’re trying some things out and summer is the time to do that. We definitely don’t have kids completely out of position by any means.”
