Pine River softball team ends strong summer slate

LEROY — Athletes are getting ready for the fall season as Pine River softball coach Laura Mumby reflects on a recently completed summer of softball.

Mumby coached the summer team in Mount Pleasant. But the squad faced some scheduling challenges.

“It’s mostly girls that will play varsity next season and some young ones that wanted to go,” she said. “We only played three weekends of fall doubleheaders. We got no-shows one week and only played one game. We went down there twice and only played an inning and got rained out.”

Pitchers were Brooke Pennington, Paige Esiline and Alexis Stokely and are slated to be the hurlers for the Bucks in 2014.

Those three were also among the top hitters in the fall along with Morgan Kanouse, Alyssa and Jenna Johnson.

“It was important to get the kids to play together because we lost so many seniors,” Mumby said. “They got a lot of innings in.”

Mumby is looking into possibly having a fall league, perhaps Sunday doubleheaders for players not involved in other sports.
