Pine River softball suffers two conference losses

LEROY — The Pine River softball team suffered a pair of setbacks to McBain in its first Highland Conference doubleheader of the season.

The Bucks (2-10, 0-2 Highland) suffered a 12-4 loss in the first game before falling on the wrong end of a 4-3 score in the nightcap.

Brooke Pennington took the pitching loss in the first contest, giving up eight earned runs on nine hits. Pennington walked eight batters and struck out five. Jenny Wickens led the Bucks offensively by going 3-for-4 with an RBI while Alyssa Johnson was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. In the nightcap, Alexis Stokely took the loss on the mound after giving up four earned runs on seven hits in addition to two strikeouts. Pennington had a hit and an RBI for the Bucks while Kassy Nelson and Wickens each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Pine River is back in action Monday to play a nonconference doubleheader at Big Rapids.
