Pine River softball players earn all-conference honors

LEROY  — Seniors Alyssa Johnson and Jenny Wickens led the way for Pine River’s first-team All-Highland Conference players in softball this season.

Johnson is a third baseman and Wickens an outfielder.

Sophomore shortstop Jenna Johnson also made the first team.

Alexis Stokely was an honorable mention choice as a pitcher.

All-district include those four and Brooke Pennington as a utility player. Wickens was selected as an all-regional player and will be a candidate for all-state honors.

Wickens batted .448 this season. “She only made two errors in the outfield and had five assists,” Pine River coach Laura Mumby said.

Alyssa Johnson batted .304 while Jenna Johnson was at .357.

“Alyssa only made six errors at third base,” Mumby said. “Her fielding average was over .900.”

Jenna Johnson did the job for the Bucks at shortstop, and could play other positions.

“She had a couple of games at catching,” Mumby said. “About 95 percent of the time, she was at short.”

Pennington, a senior, batted .305. Stokely was at .283. They shared the pitching duties for the Bucks this season.

While the Bucks have called it a season for 2014, they’re getting ready for 2015 with summer softball. Mumby said the summer league will start this week at Bristol. Cadillac, Manton and Reed City will also be involved. It will be a five-week season with action 5 p.m. every Wednesday. Each week will feature doubleheaders.
