LEROY — Houghton Lake outscored Pine River 10-1 in the first half to end its game on the mercy rule at halftime Monday.

It was the first game of the season for the Bucks. Houghton Lake is 2-0.

Schroeder Vanderhoof scored Pine River’s only goal after it was 6-0.

“We knew Houghton Lake was going to be tough,” said Pine River coach Jenny Hoaglund. “Unfortunately, it was a bad time to be our first game of the season.”

Brendan Hans had four goals while Jimmy Garrett added two goals and four assists for Houghton Lake.

“We work well as a team,” Hans said. “There’s a lot of teamwork.”

Pine River plays Thursday at McBain Northern Michigan Christian.

“There were parts of the game when the team communicated quite well,” Hoaglund said. “There were other parts of the game that they didn’t communicate very well at all. They’re recognizing that. It’s an ongoing process.”

Vanderhoof and Ethan Crawford are among the few players back with a great deal of experience. The Bucks graduated seven players from a year ago.

“The seniors have to step up and the underclassmen have to step up too,” Hoaglund said.
