BIG RAPIDS — The Crossroads Charter Academy boys soccer team took care of business by defeating Pine River 5-0 Thursday at home.

Ethan Davis notched a hat trick and David Hunt and Josh Scott each added one goal. Cameron Carnes earned the shutout in goal for the Cougars.

“We are in the process of regaining some of our foundational play,” head coach Josh Yurick said. “We have a lot of guys who think that they can push through on skill alone and forget that it takes everyone to get together. We didn’t get anything in the second half and that’s been haunting me all season long. If we can break that cycle, that would be fantastic.

“Overall I think we did pretty well. Everyone got some time out there.”

CCA scored all five goals in the first half and was unable to find the back of the net in the second half.

“We’ve got some guys that need to break that mental glass and find the back of the net,” Yurick said. “If they can do that before the end of the season, that would be fantastic. I think that stopped us tonight. There were guys who had 4-5 shots and were not on target.

“As soon as they’re frustrated, they’re not calm enough to find the back of the net.”

Part of the reason CCA couldn’t score was due to the play of Pine River goalkeeper Caleb Bowman, who rebounded after a rough first half to keep the Cougars from scoring in the second half. Bowman finished with 15 saves.

“I congratulated him on his performance,” Yurick said. “He’s a real strong keeper. There were a couple of those five he could’ve cleaned up too. It’s amazing to see a guy with the athleticism to be in a foot race one-on-one with the guy with the ball.”

Also for Pine River, Jake Johnson had nine blocks and one shot on goal, Tyler Lindquist had eight blocks and Omar Aguilar had four shots on goal.
