Pine River soccer players prepare for practice season

LEROY — It was a busy summer for many Pine River athletic programs, including the Bucks soccer team.

Practices won’t begin for the soccer squad until Aug. 12, but there were some summer activities including open fields and drop-in practices last week. A open field on Monday drew 10 players, boys and girls.

“We’ve had other sessions,” Morgan Edstrom, who also played last year, said. “They’re like an hour and half to two hours and we shoot on goal.”

Edstrom will be a sophomore on this season’s team.

“It’s pretty helpful,” she said of the summer work. “It keeps us in conditioning. We have a soccer camp for three days (last week) in Cadillac.”

She indicated about five Pine River players attended those camps.

The drop-in camps are extremely informal, Edstrom noted.

“We just do whatever we want,” she said, adding that kicking and other fundamentals is a major focus.

Pine River doesn’t have a girls program but several girls like Edstrom play on the boys team. The Bucks play in the Northern Michigan Soccer Conference and are coached by Jenny Hoaglund.
