LEROY — Mason Powell had 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Hunter Esiline had 13 points and 11 boards to lead Pine River (3-3, 2-2) 55-51 in boys basketball Highland Conference action on Friday over McBain Northern Michigan Christian.

“I was pretty happy with our intensity on defense,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said. “(NMC) was hot in the second half and we were slow to adjust. I thought we did a nice job.

“It was a really fun basketball game. It’s two evenly matched teams. It went back and forth. It was close the entire second half.”

Pine River was scheduled to be at Kalkaska on Tuesday, weather permitting.

The Bucks are home against Lake City on Thursday in conference action.

Next week, the Bucks will take on two Osceola County rivals.

They are home Tuesday to face Reed City in nonleague action. On Jan. 27, they are at Evart in Highland Conference play.
