Pine River sneaks past Lake City

LEROY — Pine River’s football team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 42-35 victory over Highland Conference opponent Lake City for homecoming Friday.

The Bucks scored the go-ahead touchdown with five minutes left and Tyler Wing had an interception at the end of the game.

“It was definitely a much needed win after a couple of losses in a row,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said. “Going into the thick of our schedule, we needed to get that win with the playoff picture still in sight. It was a pretty big win that we had to have.”

Quarterback Mason Powell rushed for 84 yards and two touchdowns and also passed for 79 yards and a score.

“Mason Powell had a heckuva game,” Martin said. “We’re a little banged up and he ended up playing a lot of defense and special teams along with playing quarterback. He had a huge night.”

Matt Goodenow had two halfback passes, both for touchdowns. Hunter Esiline had 106 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

“This was good for our team,” Martin said. “We’re still a little banged up injury-wise. The people we did have were able to come through and get that win for us.”

Defensive people out with injuries include Dominic Garcia (knee) and Payton Pacola (hand). Chase Morrison is playing with a cast. Safety Nathan Park (ankle) is on crutches.

Pine River is at Manton on Friday night.
