LEROY -- Pine River ended a strong season on Thursday with a loss in the district final to Manton.

This marked setter Sophie Johnson's third season on the Pine River varsity squad.

"I really like to play," she said. "I've played (setter) ever since my sophomore year. It was coach's idea."

Johnson admits she initially had reservations about playing setter.

"I know I had to do what's best for the team," she said.

Johnson said she's improved each year as a setter.

"You have to talk a lot to your hitters and passers," Johnson said.

She had seven straight aces in a win during the season against Evart.

"The key is focus," she said, adding she tries to spot the ball effectively on the opponent's side of the court and have a movement which makes the ball tricky to return.

"The team is doing really good," Johnson said. "We won a lot this year and beat Lake City on senior night. The key is intensity."
