LEROY — It’s football tournament action time on Saturday when Pine River conducts its annual 7-on-7 passing camp.

Pine River coach Pat Craven said teams start playing at 9 a.m. and end around 3 p.m.

In each game, teams, playing on half field, will get the ball at the 40 and will try for first downs as they move closer to the end zone. Only passing is allowed.

There will be two pools of four team. Each team in  the pool plays each other and then a winners and losers bracket is set up after pool play.

One pool consists of Alpena, Big Rapids Crossroads, Manton and Pine River. The other bracket has Baldwin, Evart, Lake City and White Cloud. Two games will take place both on the Pine River playing field and on the practice field.

It’s the third year for the Pine River tourney. Alpena won the first year and Lake City last year.

“It’s competitive and the kids get a great workout,” Craven said. “Each game is like a half hour.”

Pine River has had a busy football summer, Craven noted.

“It’s gone all right,” Caven said. “You’re always wishing you had a good commitment from the kids to show up. Participation was down a little bit. Hopefully, it will be better in July than it was in June.”
