LEROY — Erica Buchner’s basketball days are not over yet.

The Pine River senior, who helped the Bucks to Highland Conference and Class C district titles, signed a national letter of intent last week to play basketball at Kirtland Community College.

Ty McGregor, coach for men and women at Kirtland, located in Roscommon, was present for the signing.

McGregor said he and his wife, Butch, the Kirkland assistant coach, decided to recruit the Pine River area with the reputation of the Bucks program. They decided to watch Buchner play.

“My wife liked what she saw,” McGregor said. “I’m excited to take the next big step and work with her as a lady, student and basketball player. When I saw her at an open gym she had some fight to her. She has good game athleticism. I’m looking forward to it,”

McGregor said Buchner’s playing position with the team is up in the air. Last season was his first as the women’s coach and the team struggled. He’s trying to rebuild the program through recruiting.

Buchner, he said, “Will have ample opportunity right away.”

That sounds good to Buchner, who said Kirtland started showing interest in her services after Pine River defeated McBain in the district. She was contacted by McGregor’s wife.

“She said if I was interested to give her a call. I called the next day,” Buchner said. ”I wanted to play basketball. They’re the first ones that talked to me. It’s not far from home.”

Buchner hopes to use the same strengths for Kirtland as she did for Pine River.

“I’m good at rebounding and hustling down the floor,” she said. “I’m very excited. I can’t wait for it to start.”

Buchner said she’ll be in the nursing program at Kirtland.
