Pine River senior set to give team rebounding defensive skills

LEROY — Conner Hoaglund is set to make contributions in his senior season for Pine River’s boys basketball team.

Hoaglund is among the four seniors on the team. He was on the Swarm team last season.

“I was there mostly to rebound and make sure no one got behind us to get an easy bucket,” he said. “For the most part, I think we did pretty good.”

The Swarm unit would come in and play several minutes to give the starters a break and also create problems for the opposition. It gave players like Hoaglund valuable experience as a junior. During the offseason, he participated in summer scrimmages and camps.

Hoaglund said he’s improved “quite a bit” from last year and has emerged into a starting forward’s spot. He’s looking at rebounding, blocking shots and playing strong defense. Rebounding is his strength, Hoaglund said.

He entered the season focusing on being more aggressive on defense, Hoaglund said, adding the team is similar to last season’s squad with the run-and-gun approach.

The Bucks are 3-0 and idle until Jan. 5 when they play at Beal City. Last year’s squad was 17-4, and Hoaglund indicated this team was capable of that type of record again.

“Defense is the key to winning,” he said. “The Highland Conference has Manton and McBain, which I’d say are the two we’ll have to focus the most on.”
