Pine River senior outfielder set for strong season

LEROY — Kyla Johnson is among the seniors on the Pine River softball team being relied upon to provide valuable contributions for the Bucks.

After a midseason doubleheader loss to Big Rapids, Johnson was still confident the Bucks could enjoy success throughout the rest of the season.

The Bucks leftfielder is in her second varsity season.

“(Her season) was good at the beginning but has gotten shaky the past two games,” Johnson said. “We’re working some things out defensively.”

Last season at the plate, “I was fairly solid,” she said. “I just started playing three years ago, so I’m still getting used to it.”

But Johnson, who had a strong volleyball season last fall, is hoping this will be her best hitting season.

“I drop my bat a lot,” she said. “I need to learn to get my hands right to the ball. Right now, our defense isn’t too bad and we need to work on batting. Our goal is that maybe if we let them score 10 runs, that’s OK, as long as we score 11.”

Pine River was scheduled to play at Manistee on Tuesday and will be at Beal City on Friday. There are home games on May 17 with Manton and on May 20 with Lake City.
