LEROY -- Pine River’s girls basketball team is 7-1 and senior Haley Raymond has been among the Bucks’ players that have contributed heavily to that early season success.

Raymond had eight rebounds for the Bucks recently in a 69-42 win over McBain Northern Michigan Christian in Highland Conference play,

“On defense I thought we were doing pretty well,” Raymond said. “We were moving our feet. It was a long break coming back. Offensively, we did good. A lot of our shots didn’t fall. That happens every now and then.

“This is Raymond’s third year on varsity.

“My first year I was pretty nervous and kind of tentative on the court. Last year, I played hard and made a lot of improvement since then.”

Raymond is looking to do “a little bit of everything this year; go down, grab some rebounds or go up top and shoot some threes. It all depends on what my team needs me to do. Defense is definitely my biggest strength. I’m pretty aggressive.

“Offensively,” she added, “I need to have the confidence to take a lot more shots than I do.”

The Bucks play Evart at home Thursday.

“Our team is playing really well together right now,” she said. “We’re a team that played together for a lot of years. We can read each other. We know what we’re going to do and where we’re going to go. That helps out a lot.”

The key is “working together,” Raymond said. “We have to want to win. We have to give it everything we have and not worry about the results of the game but worry about what’s going on at the moment.”
