Pine River senior looking forward to rest of the season

LEROY — Pine River’s girls basketball team is in the final two weeks of the regular season and Erin Koetje likes the direction in which the Bucks are headed.

Koetje had a strong game last Friday when her Bucks defeated Marion 63-26.

“I thought we played very well,” she said. “We shot the ball pretty good. We played defense well too.”

Koetje had a season-high 11 rebounds. Her previous high was seven.

“I came out tonight really focused and excited for the game,” she said. “That was probably part of it.”

Since the start of the season, “it’s coming along much better,” Koetje said. “We’re playing more as a team.”

Rebounding has been a key role for Koetje. “Pretty much any area (coach Shawn Ruppert) needs me, I’m willing to take over,” she said.

The key in rebounding is “boxing out and reading where it will be going,” Koetje said.

Pine River’s only two conference losses so far were to McBain.

“I think in those games, we came in a little nervous and let the nerves get to us,” Koetje said, adding that if the Bucks were able to play McBain the playoffs, “we’d have to work on our defense and penetrate to the basket on offense. We want to work hard and work on our offense.”

The districts are Feb. 24-28 at Beal City.

“We need to continue to do what we’re doing and hustling, running the floor,” Koetje said.
