Pine River senior having strong season at running back

LEROY — Matt Goodenow and the Pine River rushing attack had a strong game in week 2 against Mancelona and wouldn’t mind repeating that in upcoming games.

Goodenow had 112 yards and a touchdown in the 33-6 win over Mancelona.

Pine River was 2-0 after that game but has lost to Beal City and McBain and is now 2-2.

Goodenow (6-2, 175), a senior, is in his second varsity season. He was on the district-title winning team a year ago.

“We were successful and played together really well,” he said.

Goodenow also plays cornerback and starts on offense.

“I feel like I’ve improved a lot,” he said. “We had a lot of summer stuff going on.”

Against Mancelona, “we had a lot of good blocking in that game,” Goodenow said, adding the “breaking off tackles and seeing the field pretty well” are his strengths as a ball carrier.

“I’ve got some speed,” he added.

As a cornerback, Goodenow and his teammates focus on man defense to stay with pass coverage.

After two games, “we’re looking really good,” he said, adding that the key against Beal City was to eliminate mistakes.

But the Aggies offense proved to be too much for the Bucks. The drive for the playoffs resumes in home action on Friday against Lake City in Highland Conference action.
