Pine River senior finishes strong cross country season
LEROY — Julia Lucas played a key role in the success of Pine River’s girls cross country team this season.
It’s her senior season and she was usually the No. 3 runner for the Bucks.
“It’s going a lot better this year, it’s a really good team,” she said. “This is my best season so far. It’s the experience, I think. I’m working a little harder this year.”
Her best time has been 22:50, about a minute faster than last year.
“I think it’s just the consistency of my time throughout the race,” Lucas said.
Her goal was a 22:30 before the season ends. At the regional, she was 49th in 23:10.
“I will try to keep up with Olivia (Thompson) who’s right ahead of me and try to catch her,” Lucas said of the No. 3 Pine River runner.
The Bucks hosted the final Highland Conference jamboree on Oct. 14.
The league “has been pretty tough, there’s a lot of good girls,” Lucas said. “I feel it’s tougher than it was last year.”
Depth was a key asset for Pine River this cross country season, Lucas added.
Her third mile “is when I start picking it up a little more,” Lucas said. “I (would like) a stronger start.”
