LEROY — Devyn Powell completed four all-state seasons at Pine River girls track last week and took another step forward in her athletic career on Friday.

Powell signed a letter of intent to run track and field, indoor and outdoor, at Saginaw Valley State University.

A 4.0 student at Pine River, Powell has been in cross country and track four seasons each and basketball three years for the Bucks. She won the 400-meter state title as a sophomore and was fifth at this year’s state meet.

“She was our Highland Conference athlete of the year,” said Pine River Athletic Director Aaron Schab. “I think she’s one of the most accomplished athletes, male or female, that we’ve had here at Pine River. She’s been academic all-state. She’s been active in other groups, outside of athletics.”

Powell said she was looking at attending Saginaw Valley regardless of if she would be in athletics.

“I decided to try it and decided to sign,” said Powell, who had been looking at Saginaw Valley at the beginning of the school year.

Powell said she’ll be running the 200 and 400 in both track seasons and won’t be in any other sport.

Powell had also looked at Siena Heights. She decided on Saginaw Valley after watching a meet at SVSU. The school is building a new indoor track facility.

“A couple of girls graduated (in the 200 and 400) and that’s why they were interested in me,” Powell said. “They’ll give me a workout schedule to follow.”

Saginaw Valley, an NCAA Division II school, competes in the Great Lakes Conference.

“I’m very excited,” Powell said. “The girls I did meet are awesome. That made me even more excited.”

Powell said she’s thought about a college track career since she was little.

“I’ve always loved to run,” she said. “I guess I always pictured myself running for a long time.”

Powell will be getting academic and athletic scholarship aid from Saginaw Valley.
