LEROY — Pine River continues to boast plenty of depth with its wrestling team with athletes like 145-pounder Brock Nelson playing a huge role in that respect.

Nelson is a sophomore this season.

“Last year, I placed fifth in the state,” he said. “It was a good year for me personally. I feel I fell a little below my expectations, maybe because of my surroundings. But maybe I did meet my expectations.”

Nelson is going for a state title this season.

“I’m working on my top position trying to provide a lot of pressure,” he said. “I’m working on my stamina so I can go all three (rounds) strong.”

The Bucks have been state semifinalists the last two years.

“We lost a lot of our heavier guys on top (to graduation),” Nelson said. “We have some newcomers I feel can make a big impact to our team this year. So hopefully, we can make it back to the semis and maybe even to the finals.”

Nelson said neutral when he’s on his feet is a strength.

“I want to work on my top position,” he said,

The Bucks are home with Manton on Wednesday.
