Pine River runners compete at state championships

LEROY —  Against cold weather and stiff winds, and on a muddy course, Pine River had two runners perform in the Division 3 race for cross country Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.

Devyn Powell was 74th in 20:40.2 for the girls. Ben Rigling was 87th in the boys race in 17:28.4.

“I’m really happy with it,” Powell, a senior, said. “My goal was to come in and runt the best I could because it’s the last one I’ll ever run in cross country. I did that. I can’t ask for much more.

“I feel my kick was my strongest part. My second mile was probably my

weakest.”

It was Powell’s first time back at the state finals since her freshman year when she placed 119th.

“It felt really good, Powell said. “It was cool to start my high school career here and even better to finish it here. It was cool enough for me and easier to breathe and I could wear my underarm and feel comfortable.”

Powell ran against 239 girl runners.

“Devyn Powell represented Pine River’s cross country team well,” said Pine River coach Ross Vrieze.

Rigling went up against 237 runners.

“He started out rather fast and finished even faster. It was a great experience and we look forward to next year,” Vrieze said.
