Pine River player anxious to start football season

LEROY — Austin Cole has had a busy summer in getting ready for Pine River’s 2012 football season. And the Bucks senior acknowledges that it’s probably going to get busier.

Cole’s team was 1-4 at the Pine River 7-on-7 passing tournament at the Bucks’ football field on Saturday, July 14.

“We did excellent, we didn’t have very many guys come out,” he said. “We did better than all the others ... there was a lot of improvement. We  had a sophomore came out.”

Cole usually plays safety or corner in the Bucks defense but has been moved to the monsterback position.

“We want to get better,” Cole said. “We need to get guys deep and watch the pass. We’ve been getting beat deep too much.”

The passing scrimmages, with no running involved, enables defenses to focus more on the pass.

During the summers “we’ve been putting in a lot of work,” Cole said. “We have weights on Mondays and Thursdays. On Tuesday, we go to Cadillac for the passing league.”

The official practice season starts on Aug. 6.

“What we do now affects it all through the season,” Cole said. “What we do in the offseason is what pays off.”

Cole also runs track. As for football,” we’re looking good,” he said “We’ve got a new lineman coach. We have a lot of skilled players and a good quarterback (Skyler Nelson).”
