Pine River places three, Evart two on all-league teams

Pine River had three players and Evart placed two on the all-Highland Conference girls basketball team announced recently.

Jamie Justin, Kassy Nelson and Haley Raymond were on the first team for Pine River while Devyn Powell earned honorable mention honors.

Justin averaged 16 points a game. She led the team in rebounds and was second in assists. Justin also earned honorable mention all-state honors.

“She was at the top in every category,” said Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert. “She was our leader on the floor.”

Nelson, a freshman, averaged eight points a game.

Raymond “was our leading rebounder and was one of our better defensive players too Ruppert said. “Devyn made it mostly for her defense. I’m happy with all of those girls.”

Kortney Dennis and Magdalen Hyde represented Evart on the first team while Chelsea Bengry was on the honorable mention list.

All three are seniors.

Dennis averaged 10.4 points and 6.0 rebounds a game.

“She’s been solid in her four years on the varsity,” said Evart coach Larry Brown. “She’s a good team player. She played some guard for us this year which she wasn’t used to playing. She’s very versatile.”

Hyde was at 8.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

“She did a great job at guard for us this year,” Brown said. “She worked hard all summer. As the year went on, she scored more points for us and did a great job all-around.”

Bengry was at 6.0 points and 9.0 rebounds.

“Chelsea worked hard all summer on her offensive game play,” said Brown. “She was our foundation on defense. She did a great job on rebounding and blocking shots for us.”
