LEROY — It’s been a fun season for Mike Jones and the Pine River football team.

The Bucks are 8-3 and winners of the district title after a 34-27 topping of Sanford Meridian last week.

“We’re going hard in practice and knowing what our plays are,” Jones, a two-way lineman for the Bucks, said. “We’re just not giving up.”

The win over Tawas in the predistrict gave notice to everyone that the Bucks weren’t simply happy just being in the playoffs.

“We were pretty confident,” Jones said. “We came out pretty good. We had some minor mistakes here and there. Overall, we started off pretty good. It was a very good game.”

The offense has had success throughout the season.

“Our line is good at blocking, we block well, and we have fast running backs and fullbacks that can run everyone over,” Jones said.

He was confident of a win over Sanford Meridian and the Bucks came through. Pine River now plays at Boyne City Friday night in the regional final.

It’s been quite a ride for a team that was 3-6 last season and was 4-3 after its first seven games this year. A four-game winning streak has the Bucks playing as deep as they’ve ever been in the playoffs.

“We get pumped up a lot more (with playoffs),” he said. “We’ve made history by winning our first playoff game.”

They obviously also made plenty of history with the district title.
