Pine River junior set to have her best volleyball season
LEROY — Jenna Johnson is a junior for Pine River’s volleyball program who has plenty of varsity experience behind her.
Johnson is among the returning players for the Bucks who will start their season this weekend.
“It was a really good year,’” Johnson said. “I did OK in my position.”
She worked on passing last year but is focusing on setting also this year. She’s working on her hip action and other fundamentals of setting to improve on her setting.
Johnson, who was also in the Pine River softball program this spring and summer, is hoping to show improvement this volleyball season. She’s also looking at helping the Bucks in serving.
“I’m working at positioning the ball,” she said.
This is the second week of volleyball practices for the Bucks. They started on Aug. 13.
“The team is looking good,” Johnson said. “I feel that we get along pretty well.”
Defense and hitting should be strengths for the team.
Johnson hopes to improve on her passing and other elements of her game.
In the Highland Conference, Beal City is expected to be among the teams to beat.
The Bucks open the season Saturday at the Traverse City Central Invitational. They have a home quad on Monday and then are on the road at Mason County Central Tuesday, at the Kingsley Invitational Sept. 6 and at Manistee Sept. 9. The Bucks have their home invitational Sept. 13 and open their Highland Conference season Sept. 16 with Lake City.
