Pine River junior set for banner seasons in two sports
LEROY — Curtis Cilwa is looking for his senior football and wrestling season at Pine River to be his best one.
Cilwa was at the wrestling and football workouts last week at Pine River. He’s been at Pine River since his sophomore season. He’s had a hectic summer schedule, but was able to fit in some time with the football and wrestling programs this week.
“I’m working on going to the military right now,” he said.
Cilwa has been a two-way lineman for Pine River. He did not see a lot of action last season. He’s expecting that to change this year.
“I was more into getting ready for this year,” Cilwa said. “I’m hoping I’ve improved quite a bit.”
He’s 6-foot-6 and is working on getting stronger.
“I’m pretty good for my size,” he said. “I’m working at trying to get quicker off my stance.”
Cilwa said his involvement with wrestling pays off from his football work.
Pine River’s football program will be at a camp this week in Montrose. The practice season starts on Aug. 8. The kickoff is home Aug. 26 with Kalkaska.
