LEROY — Jacob Roberts is in his junior season at Pine River and ready to help the Bucks wrestling team have another enjoyable winter.

He’s at 125 pounds compared to 119 last season. It’s his third varsity season.

A major highlight this season for Roberts, who was a state qualifier and went 0-2 last year, this season was to make the trip to Marquette prior to the Christmas break for a prestigious wrestling invitational.

Roberts hopes to return to the state finals and place in the top five.

"It will take extra time and drilling,” he said. “I wrestled one time during July (at Pine River).”

After his first 11 matches, Roberts had an 8-3 record.

“I feel like sometimes, I need to get my head in the game a lot more,” he said. “Singles and my doubles have been (effective).”

Roberts indicated he wants to improve on swing singles.

“The team is looking really good,” he said. “Last year, we didn’t have a middle weight and that kind of hurt us in the long run. This year we have a strong all-around team.”

Decator and Hudson will be tough teams at state finals if the Bucks get that far, Roberts indicated.

Pine River is at Manton on Wednesday and at the Mio-AuSable Invitational on Saturday.
