LEROY — Elijah Lewis and other Pine River football players are getting ready for the 2017 season.

For Lewis, a sophomore, reflecting back on the 2017 track season brings back fond memories.

The highlight of the season came at the Division 3 state finals when Lewis placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (50.74). He was 19th in the long jump (19-4 ½) and 11th in the 200-meter dash (23:10).

Lewis was in several events this season. His personal records were 21-8 ½ in the long jump, 6-2 in the high jump and 50.74 seconds in the 400.

Top highlights for Lewis was breaking the school record in the 200 and long jump.

“It’s been a very strong year,” he said. “I had a lot of great competition. It helped me to keep the momentum going forward to the state finals.”

Lewis also was in Pine River track as a freshman. He said he improved tremendously from last season.

“Working in the offseason means a lot,” he said.

In the 200, Lewis’ strength was “my curves, and my straightaway,” he said. “I’m good at opening up and using my strides.”

In the 400, “it’s been the training I do for it,” that has made him successful, Lewis said.

He was hoping for top five finishes but had to settle for the one sixth-place effort.

In the long jump, “my acceleration going toward the boards,” Lewis said, has been the key for his success. “I can get pretty well off the board.”

He also has been involved in football and basketball.

“Definitely track and football have been successful for me,” Lewis said.
