Pine River junior eager to try new positions
LEROY — Dominic Garcia and his Pine River football teammates have had a busy summer and are more than ready for the fall season.
Summer practices wrapped up last week and regular sessions officially begin on Monday. A junior, Garcia was a linebacker and offensive guard last season.
But last week’s two-day summer camp was a big moment for Garcia.
“I’m going to learn a new position,” he said. “I’m going to be a fullback, second string, this year. We have more players this year.”
When he plays fullback on the option, Garcia expects to do some running, blocking and catching.
“I’ve waited my whole life to play it,” he said. “Last year, I tried out for it, but we were short on players so I had to be on the line. This year, they gave me a chance.”
There’s anticipated to be 50 percent more players on the roster this season. Garcia figures on also playing middle linebacker.
“We’re pretty much going to drill our plays, drill our footwork, drill everything,” he said.
Garcia also wrestles and participated in that sport during the summer.
“I did a lot of weight lifting and before weight lifting, I’d wrestle for an hour,” he said.
Compared to 12 months ago, “I’ve learned a lot more,” he said. “I just know more.”
Garcia expects to be a quicker player this season.
“We’ve had a lot of people coming to the weight room,” he said, “more than most schools in our division. We’re happy to say that.”
