LEROY -- Two Osceola County rivals battled down to the final minutes in Highland Conference boys basketball action on Thursday with Pine River (1-1, 2-1) posting a 70-56 win over Evart (0-3, 0-3).

The Bucks started out with a strong first quarter. Sasha Huffman's 3-pointer gave the Bucks a 17-5 lead. Cam Brasington scored on a breakaway to make it 17-9. But Hunter Kanouse's triple gave the Bucks a 20-9 lead and it was 22-12 after the first eight minutes.

With Brasington continuing to hit key shots, the Wildcats made their move in the second and led 33-30 after baskets by Brasington and Haidyn Simmer.

Lane Ruppert scored for the Bucks late in the half to cut Evart's halftime lead to 35-34.

Pine River took the lead back in the second half and led 45-40 at 4:53 on Marcus Jurik's basket.

Huffman had a 4-point play at 3:31 of the third for a 50-42 Bucks lead. Evart hung close and trailed 54-50 after Brasington's layup to end the third quarter.

Donvavin Reagan scored for Evart to open the fourth quarter.

Brasington's jumper cut the gap to 55-54. Justin Buckner scored to tie the game 56-all with five minutes to go. But the Bucks netted two straight baskets including a slam dunk by Jurik.

Ruppert scored at 3:23 for a 62-56 bulge and Jurik scored again moments later while the Wildcats went cold.

Huffman's triple at 1:01 made it 69-56.

"We played a really good first quarter and a really good fourth quarter," Pine River coach Brian Godenow said. "We really lost our way in the second and third. But we regained our composure and fisnihed the game strong."

Jurik led the Bucks with 23 points while Huffman added five threes and had 19 points.

"I think we started off real good, but once we slowed down, we let them get some baskets and it was bad for us because it took away momentum," Jurik said

Brasington had 20 for Evart while Reagan added 11.

Evart entered the game at 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the league. Pine River was 1-1 and 0-1 in the Highland.

"We played hard but that first half killed us a little bit," Reagan said. "We picked up the pace but we kept swinging the ball to open men but (couldn't hit it)."

"We played pretty solid but at the end, we got a little gassed," Simmer said. "We couldn't keep up in the fourth."

Pine River is home on Jan. 3 against Farwell.
