Pine River heavyweight wrestler competing in national tournament

LEROY — Chase Morrison has enjoyed an eventful summer for the Pine River wresting team.

This week, Morrison left for Fargo, N.D., to participate in the national Greco-Roman and freestyle national tournament. He’s in both divisions.

“It’s top two from the state tournament,” he said. “You pay it and you’re on the team to go.”

Morrison was expected to be there most of this week. He’s wrestling at heavyweight. He was 44-8 for the Pine River wrestling team last season and took fourth in the state.

Morrison also went to the national tournament last season.

“I didn’t do so well,” he said. “I’m hoping to do a little better this year. I want to place out there. It will be tough. It’s pretty tough out there.”

This summer work will help him with takedowns during wrestling’s regular season.

“It gives me more mat time,” he said. “It gives me more of a feel for what more heavyweights outside of Michigan are like. When I go into college, I’ll be ready for other heavyweights.”

Morrison also is a lineman for the Pine River football team. He’s been participating in workouts during the week, Monday through Thursday. Athletes, like Morrison, who also wrestle, had been doing both sports on Mondays and Thursdays. The summer work, Morrison said, should pay off in a major way during the football season in the fall and wrestling campaign in the winter.

He’s one of several Pine River athletes who do both sports.
