LEROY — Devaun Sims has been handling the goaltending duties for a young Pine River soccer team this season and is making favorable impressions on his coaching staff and teammates.

Sims is a sophomore and is in his first actual season of being a goalkeeper. He previously played defense.

He’s been in soccer five years but Sims decided this season to become goalkeeper.

“I tried it at beginning of the year last year and at the end,” he said. “I decided I liked it and would give it a try.”

Sims worked with the previous goalie to learn the skills of the game. He has had some strong games in which he’s been stopping an avalanche of shots from the opposition.

Anticipating of where the ball is going to be has been Sims’ focus.

“Most of the time I anticipate the cross-in so I was able to go out and get it,” he said.

One of Sims’ better games was against Gladwin when he and the Pine River defense shut out his opponents in the second half.

“I have to work on my diving abilities and be more confident coming out further,” he said.

Sims is looking for major improvement as the season progresses.
