Pine River girls teams stay busy during the offseason months

LEROY – It was a scene indicative of how busy high school athletes can be during the summer.

Recently in the Pine River gym, varsity volleyball coach Jana Dennis was finishing up a summer program with members of her team.

In the corner of the gym, Bucks girls basketball players were waiting for the end of the volleyball practice, which would be followed by a hoops session. Girls basketball coach Shawn Ruppert was getting together a cart of basketballs.

When the volleyball session ended, some players left but others, who are basketball players stayed.

It's been a busy summer.

Ruppert, also currently working with his varsity baseball squad, was getting his team ready for a three-day Saginaw Valley University camp recently. They've also had a scrimmage.

“We're going to try to get everything done in June,” Ruppert said, adding about five of his girls are also working with the volleyball team. He's been involving players that he figures will be on his 2012-13 squad.

“It's more about team bonding,” Ruppert said. “We've been to Northwood before, it's the first time we're going to Saginaw Valley.”

Dennis said volleyball practices have been conducted every Thursday and will continue until mid-July.
