Pine River girls sweep opportunities

LEROY - It just wasn't Crossroads Charter Academy's night on Thursday.

The Cougars were swept by North Bay Academy and Pine River 2-0.

CCA fell 25-13, 25-14 to the team from Suttons Bay in the first round.

"We struggled from the serving line, and, although we were able to get passes to the setter, we couldn't seem to connect the ball to the floor," CCA coach Kristin Yates said.

Grace Clark had two kills while Jada Meeuwes scored three solo blocks. Kenzie Cole, Natalie Chapman, and Gretchen Purcell all added one.

"We could not keep our serves and that snowballed us into not communicating or talking," Yates said.

The Cougars lost 25-11, 25-16 to Pine River in the next match.

"Our serving improved, and we really started to work together, but as it seems lately, a little too late. We were unsuccessful in earning a lead and fell in two sets," Yates said.

Jada Meeuwes earned three kills while Kenzie Cole earned two aces.

Along with its win over Crossroads, Pine River topped North Bay 25-20, 25-18.

For Pine River, Emma Whitley had 22 kills; Cayla Trowbridge had 11 digs and Sophie Johnson had 31 assists.

"We played real well tonight," Pine River coach Jana Dennis said. "We played at a good consistent level all night which allowed us to mix things up a bit. Everyone contributed tonight and these wins were truly a team effort."

Dennis continues to be impressed with Whitley's play.

"Her overall game is great," Dennis. She's a great passer and a great leader on the team. Sophie is doing a great job setting. This was a good night. We were able to get a lot of people in."
