Pine River girls stay undefeated

LEROY — Pine River’s girls basketball team celebrated the holidays last week by staying undefeated.

The Bucks downed Gladwin 62-42 in a non-conference game on Dec. 20.

The Bucks are at McBain on Jan. 6 in Highland Conference action. The Bucks have a scrimmage on Dec. 28 at Cadillac.

Pine River (5-0) had control most of the way over Gladwin (3-2), leading 16-8 after the first quarter. Logan Powell scored on a drive for a 28-13 lead late in the half.

“Gladwin’s only loss was to Midland Bullock Creek by two points,” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “Right off the bat, they weren’t ready for our speed. Our defense was outstanding.”

Anselma Barnett’s two free throws gave the Bucks a 46-20 lead midway in the third quarter. It was 50-23 after the third quarter.

Anna Lindquist scored a minute into the fourth quarter for a 54-23 Bucks’ lead. Kierra Justin scored off the glass at 4:40 for a 60-31 cushion.

“We got a lot of good effort from a lot of players,” Ruppert said. “Our bench did a good job when we got into foul trouble like Alexis Bennett, Taylor Hill and Anselma Barnett.”

Julie Justin had 14 points, while Kierra Justin added 13 and Anna Lindquist had 10.

“I think we played really good,” Lindquist said. “This was going to be our first real challenge of the year. We showed up and we played. We just had to step up our defense. We also had to run the ball on the floor.”

Powell had five rebounds and three steals.

Kierra Justin added eight rebounds. KayLee Goodman had four assists.

“We wanted to come out confident and strong,” Powell said. “We had to stop turning the ball over. We felt pretty good all the way around.”
