Pine River girls runner-up at regionals

LEROY — Pine River’s girls track team was second in the Division 3 regional meet Friday at Mason County Central.

Manistee won with 101 points while the Bucks had 88.

Devyn Powell won the 400-meter dash in 58.63 seconds. Powell also anchored the first-place 1,600-meter relay team that included Jasmine Blackrick, Erin Koetje and Michelle Kelsey.

For the Bucks, Michelle Kelsey was second in the high jump at 4-10 and second in the pole vault at 8-10. Also second was the 800-meter relay team of Mariah Holmes, Sheena Vokes, Kelsey and Devyn Powell in 149.80.

Girls that finished in the top two automatically qualified for the Division 3 state finals June 2 at Comstock Park. Others that qualified were Holmes in the 100 meter hurdles, sixth in 16.98 seconds, and the 400-meter relay team of Holmes, Blackrick, Sheena Vokes and Kelsey in 53.23 seconds for second.

“They performed very well,” said Pine River coach Dick Dietrick. “I would say they exceeded (expectations). “Devyn Powell in the open 400 had a very nice time.”

For the boys, the Bucks were ninth with 99 points. Trevor Holmes won the 3,200-meter run in 10:09.89.

Abel Langworthy tied for second in the pole vault at 12-0 while Cole Gingrich was fourth in that event at 11-6. Dustin Ecker was third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.95 seconds.

The top two finishers will go to the state finals along with others that met certain qualifying times including the 400-meter relay foursome of Austin Cole, Langworthy, Quinton Mitchell and Kyle Brasseur, plus Ecker in the 110 hurdles.

“I thought we did pretty good,” said Pine River boys coach Eric Gebhard. “To have six guys going to state is a good way to finish it out.”
