LEROY — Pine River’s girls basketball team competed at the Northwood University girls basketball camp last weekend as the Bucks close their summer season in preparation for the 2013-14 campaign.

Bucks coach Shawn Ruppert said his team also attended a shootout at Tri County. There were also open gyms including one Saturday.

Ruppert said he had 18 girls to the JV and varsity camps. “Not all of them but we had quite a few,” he said. “It’s real helpful. The girls are living together (at camps). It helps relationships. You get to work on things you won’t need to go over in the winter. Any little bit helps.”

The Bucks also graduated several players from the 2012-13 team and will have several new players, another factor which is why coaches and players put emphasis on summer camps.

Junior Kassy Nelson said the Northwood camp was helpful.

“We played pretty good,” Nelson said. “We had some really close games. We were always competitive.

“You’re learning about each other...their abilities and what they can or can’t do.”
