Pine River girls fall to Manton

LEROY ― Manton proved to be too much in a softball doubleheader sweep over Pine River with 12-5 and 8-5 wins for the Rangers Wednesday in Highland Conference action.

Alexis Stokely took the loss in the first game. She allowed 12 runs on 17 hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Manton built an 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. The Bucks had a three-run rally in that inning, keyed by Alyssa Johnson’s two-run single, making it 8-4. The Rangers were able to put the game away in the final innings. Alyssa Johnson had three hits and three RBIs while Jenna Johnson had two hits and one RBI.

In the second game, Brooke Pennington took the loss for Pine River. Pennington allowed six walks and seven hits and fanned five batters.

Manton built a 6-2 lead after five innings. Stokely had a two-run triple in the top of the seventh for the Bucks, but it wasn’t enough.

“Our pitching came through and we need to get our bat on the ball more than we have been,” Pine River coach Laura Mumby said. “We just didn’t didn’t get as many runs to win the game.”

Alyssa Johnson and Erin Millen had two hits apiece for the Bucks.

The Bucks are also without veteran starter Kassy Nelson who left the team two weeks ago.

Last week, the Bucks played four doubleheaders including a tournament at Glen Lake on Saturday. The Manton twinbill was rescheduled twice.
