Pine River girls end at 15-17
LEROY – Mike Nelson’s second season as Pine River softball coach ended with a 15-17 record.
“For the most part, we did (well) considering all the injuries we had to battle through for the entire season,” Nelson said.
Nelson said a key highlight for the Bucks was getting to the district finals against McBain.
“Challenges we have was moving players all over the field because of injuries,” Nelson said.
Top players include sophomore Emma Whitley and senior Logan Powell. Whitley was in her second varsity season as a pitcher-shortstop.
She’s an outstanding athlete who works hard all season and was a great leader on and off the field,” Nelson said. “She carried a 4.0 grade point average and hit .500 for the season.”
Whitley and Powell were both first-team All-Highland Conference and all-district, Nelson said.
Powell was in her first year of softball and played second base and outfield while batting .428.
“She was my lead-off hitter and provided leadership throughout the season,” Nelson said.
Senior Emily Trieber had a batting average of .294 with seven doubles.
“She came back from an injury to be my starting catcher,” Nelson said.
Key graduates include Powell, Trieber, Taylor Hill and Meghan Lockhart. Key returners will be Whitley, Hill, Cayla Trowridge, Jayden Draper and Dana Lindquist.
