LEROY — A profitable summer season in the Local Area Teams (LAT) League has ended for Pine River, and coach Laura Mumby definitely likes what she saw in recent weeks.

The Bucks closed out the LAT league season with a 7-2 loss to Cadillac, followed by a 9-0 blanking of Manton last Wednesday.

Pine River had five doubleheaders during the summer.

“We definitely made some progress,” Mumby said. “It was nice seeing the same kids showing up every week. We had a solid 14-to-16 players. We did a good job scheduling around camps.”

In the first game, Nichole Brown was the losing pitcher going the last three innings and striking out two while allowing seven hits and two walks. Kourtney Brock went the first three innings, leaving the game when it was 2-2. She gave up no hits and three walks while striking out two.

Paige VanHulst had a triple and two RBIs for Pine River while Jenna Johnson and Ally Stokely had a pair of singles. Carleigh Trowbridge had an RBI.

In the second game, Dana Hill went six innings, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four. VanHulst had a single with two RBIs while Hill had a single.

Mumby figures about seven or eight of her players during the summer will be on the varsity next spring.

“We have a lot of freshmen that will be sophomores on this LAT League team,” Mumby said. “We did a lot of improvement this year, playing (various) positions and communicating with each other. One of our biggest things was communication. It was good for us to work on our communication skills. We had everyone batting and getting in some reps.”
