LEROY — Longtime Pine River girls basketball coach Shawn Ruppert resigned his position last season when he took over as athletic director.

But the position stayed in the family.

Ruppert’s son-in-law, Brandon Bowman, has taken over as coach. Practices started on Nov 6 and the season starts after Thanksgiving weekend.  Bowman had previously been the junior varsity girls basketball coach three years. He also coached on the middle school level.

“The group I’m coaching now is the one I started with in the eighth grade,” Bowman said.

Bowman and his wife Rachel both graduated in 2009. He played football, basketball and baseball.

“I enjoy working with the girls and teaching them not just about basketball but how basketball helps you succeed in the real world,” Bowman said. “I enjoy teaching them how to work as a team and be leaders.”

Bowman indicated his coaching style will be similar to Ruppert’s.

“Both of us really work had with the ‘team environment first’ and create an environment where the girls work hard,” he said. “I’d say a lot of what i do follows his philosophy.”
