Bucks win 13th straight game with victory over MCC

LEROY – It took awhile for Pine River’s shots to fall consistently Monday night. But when they did start falling, the Bucks were in control and on their way to a 67-48 non-conference girls basketball victory over Mason County Central. Jamie Justin scored 20 points for Pine River while Kassy Nelson added 17. “We had a little bit of a rough start,” said Nelson. “It was kind of slow. It’s new for us. We haven’t played at the 6 p.m. game. It was hard to adjust. It was such a different time.” Pine River is 13-1 and has won 13 straight. The Bucks led 34-23 at halftime despite suffering from a low shooting percentage until late in the half. They were able to stay ahead of the Spartans with aggressive rebounding. Justin had a 3-point play and Nelson a 3-point basket to spark Pine River to a 12-10 lead after the first quarter. Justin had 13 points in the second quarter with the first 10 coming on perfect free-throw shooting. She hit a three late in the quarter and Devyn Powell’s two field goals sparked the Bucks to the 11-point lead. Nelson hit a triple to open the quarter and Justin and Haley Raymond followed with layups for a 41-24 lead. Powell scored at 3:05 for a 48-26 Pine River advantage. Nelson hit two straight for a 52-26 lead. The Spartans continued to struggle defensively. It was 54-35 going into the fourth. Nelson’s 3-pointer early in the fourth gave her team a 59-35 advantage. “They’re a very good team,” Nelson said. “We’re faster and we just did more things right. We knew how to play defense.” For MCC, 8-7, all-stater Madison Geers scored 16 points but only hit five field goals. “Pine River has good shooters and all skills, but the key was rebounding,” said Spartan coach Mike Weinert. “They took (Geers) out of the game with foul trouble.”
