Pine River freshman having productive volleyball season

LEROY — Logan Powell is only a freshman but has been having a strong season for the Pine River Bucks.

A major highlight this season was a win over non-league rival Reed City. Communication was a key to that victory, Powell recalled, adding that it was one of her team’s best performances.

“We work on a lot of our basic skills, passing, getting the good set and finishing with a very good hit,” she said.

Powell said her teammates have welcomed her onto the varsity.

“It’s been kind of nerve racking to be a freshman coming in with a lot of seniors,” she said. “You just have to keep going and keep trying. Going from the eighth grade to varsity, it’s faster.”

Powell has been a setter.

“I kind of hopped into it as a freshman,” she said. “I did a little bit of it in eighth grade.”

A “positive attitude” is essential in being a good setter, Powell said. “I’ve had a couple of people come in and help me and give me a better idea on where to put the ball.”

Powell has also been working on other skills.

“We can do a lot better,” she said. “(Reed City) was one of our best games yet. All we can do is improve.”

Pine River is home Tuesday against Evart.
