Pine River football, wrestling teams keeping busy with workouts

LEROY — Pine River football coach Terry Martin had various players down at the field with him Monday night ready to begin their summer workouts.

It was, as Martin declared, the first day of the 2014 season.

For the next three weeks, the Bucks will have a three-day schedule with workouts on Monday and Thursday and a passing league in Cadillac on Tuesday. Linemen clinics are set following the workouts on July 14 and 21

This month will close with the Pine River football camp July 28-30.

Practices begin Aug. 11 with the home opener Aug. 28. That gives players only 2 1/2 weeks of official practices prior to the season opener.

Pine River players were at a Ferris camp July 16, followed by three weight-room sessions prior to the dead week June 30 to July 4.

The July practice schedule, while voluntary in nature, is one that the coaches encourage their players to follow. The wrestling team has been having a busy summer schedule including a camp at St. Ignace earlier this summer.

“We want to be in shape,” by the time practices start on Aug. 11, Martin noted.

Martin, an assistant wrestling coach, has also been involved with Tim Jones, head wrestling coach, in sessions for that sport prior to the football workouts. Jones is also an assistant football coach. In wrestling, the program’s annual camp featuring Michigan State wrestlers, will be this Friday.

There will be three sessions that day: 9-11 a.m., 1-3 p.m., 6-8 p.m. There will also be a Saturday session starting at 9 a.m.

Jones anticipate having wrestlers from other schools at the camp, including Lake City and Evart.

Former Pine River wrestler Luke Jones will again be at this camp along with several fellow MSU grapplers.

Summer sessions have included workouts on mats in the high school gym.
