Pine River football player looking forward to senior season

LEROY —  Hunter Esiline recently completed a strong football season at Pine River and is looking forward to his senior campaign in 2016.

The Pine River junior (6-3, 175) was in his second year on the varsity.

“Last year was a fun year going to the districts,” he said. “That was a learning year for me.”

The Bucks were district champs last season. During an injury plagued 2015 season, they finished 4-5.

This season, Esiline was again a wide receiver and outside linebacker. He wasn’t a starter last season but more so this year.

“It’s been going really good,” he said. “I’ve been leading in catches and tackles.”

He had nine catches for 300 yards after seven games. He recalls in the opener against Kalkaska that he had an 80-yard touchdown pass from Mason Powell.

“I came back over the corner and caught it,” he said. “My strength was being able to come up with the ball and getting space in the corner deep.”

He went from safety to linebacker.

“I never gave up on a play,” Esiline said. “I always go for the ball.”

Esiline admitted that his team was hoping for more wins. Four of their five losses were against playoff teams.
