Pine River focuses on scrimmage at Manistee this Thursday

LEROY — Pine River football coach Terry Martin puts his team to the test Thursday at Manistee in a multi-team scrimmage.

The Bucks are in their second week of preseason practice. Martin smiled while talking about the first week.

"I thought practices went well last week," Martin said. "I thought we were pretty profficient. I think the summer camps we attended this year really helped out, getting to have a big percentage of our kids be in practice. The kids were practicing well despite the heat and everything else."

The Thursday scrimmage will offer tests against the host school, Boyne City, Mason County Central and Shepherd.

Against each team, "we'll do 15 plays on offense and 15 plays on defense," Martin said. "At the scrimmage, we're running though our base to make sure kids are understanding their responsibility at game speed and giving the quarterback something to look at at game speed, get them on film and make some last minute corrections before the first game."

The opener is Aug. 26 at home against Kalkaska.

Martin acknowledged the scrimmage could be used to help the coaches determine various playing spots.

"We did our intrasquad scrimmage (on Saturday) and that starts to narrow down our depth chart a little bit," Martin said. "This Thursday will finalize that a little bit."
